Build a Raised Hugelkultur Garden Bed Layer by Layer
1. Bottom layer 5% cardboard
Place flattened cardboard to block weeds from sprouting.
2. Wood layer 45%
Add logs, sticks, and branches. They break down slowly, storing moisture and nutrients.
3. Green waste 10%
Use grass clippings, leaves, or small prunings. Provides nitrogen and speeds up decomposition.
4. Compost 10%
Add kitchen scraps, aged manure, or organic matter for quick nutrition.
5. Topsoil 30%
Finish with rich garden soil, mixed with a bit of sand or loam. This is the planting zone.
Tips:
Water thoroughly once built to kickstart decomposition.
Mulch the surface to retain soil moisture.
Perfect for growing lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and herbs.
