Outside
- Sow spinach, lettuce, radish and Asian greens for autumn. They germinate poorly in hot soil, so shade the row.
- Order spring bulbs now while the selection is good. You plant them in October.
- Stop feeding roses and shrubs, so the new growth hardens off before frost.
- Keep hummingbird feeders clean and full — four parts water to one part plain sugar, changed every two days above 80°F. Never honey, never dye.

The 2023 USDA hardiness map tells you what your winters do. It does not tell you your frost dates, and it says nothing about summer heat.
