How to Get Clivia to Bloom Abundantly
1. Ideal Location
Light: Clivia needs abundant light, but not direct sun exposure to avoid burning its leaves. Place it in a well-lit spot near a window, preferably one facing north, but avoid direct sunlight.
Temperature: It can withstand temperatures down to -7C, although the leaves may drop and regrow in spring. During the winter, its best to keep it indoors and away from heat sources, such as radiators.
Humidity: Although it tolerates dry air, a light mist of water daily on the leaves helps keep it cool.
2. Pot Type and Substrate
Pot: Clivia blooms best in small pots, where the roots are tightly packed. This helps the plant focus on producing flowers instead of growing downward.
Substrate: The ideal mix is 50% common soil, 30% compost, and 20% sand. This substrate ensures good drainage and nutrient retention.
3. Watering and Fertilizing
Watering in Winter: During this season, clivia needs less water; watering every 2-3 weeks is sufficient.
Watering in Spring and Summer: Increase the frequency to once a week, but make sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
Fertilizing: Use a liquid fertilizer with micronutrients every 15 days in spring and summer, which will promote abundant flowering.
4. Care to Avoid Diseases
Brown Leaves: If the plant has brown spots or burns, it has probably been exposed to too much sunlight. Change its location to an area with indirect light.
Sticky Spots: This can be caused by aphids; apply an organic insecticide to control them.
Wrinkled Leaves: Indicates a lack of water or a very dry environment. Water more often, but avoid overwatering.
Weak Shoots: This can be a sign of too much heat; Move the clivia to a cooler location.
Lack of growth or pale leaves: It may need a little fertilizer to stimulate its development.
Stem rot: This is usually due to excess water and humidity; suspend watering for at least three weeks and adjust future watering.
With this care, your clivia will not only be healthy, but will also provide you with its beautiful, vibrant flowers every year.
