Know Your Buzzers! Understanding Bees, Wasps & Hornets
Bumble Bee:
Appearance: Large, fuzzy, round, with black and yellow stripes.
Behavior: Generally gentle, focused on pollination. Rarely sting unless provoked or nest is threatened.
Honey Bee:
Appearance: Smaller than a bumble bee, golden-brown and black stripes, somewhat fuzzy.
Behavior: Vital pollinators! Can sting, but often only once as its fatal to them. Usually only aggressive near their hive.
Yellow Jacket:
Appearance: Smooth body, bright yellow and black stripes, more slender than bees.
Behavior: Often aggressive, especially near food sources or nests which can be underground. Can sting multiple times. Known for bothering picnics!
Bald-Faced Hornet:
Appearance: Large, black and white markings not yellow. Smooth body.
Behavior: Very aggressive when their nest is disturbed. Build large, paper-like nests in trees or shrubs. Can sting multiple times.
